Tourism Industry Honours Award Winners at Tourism Excellence Awards Gala

 

 

 

 

St. John's NL - Februiary 22, 2013 - Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) hosted its annual Tourism Excellence Awards Gala on Friday night as the grand finale to the highly successful 30th Annual Conference and Trade Show held in St. John’s. The Tourism Excellence Awards Gala featured the presentation of the Tourism Excellence Awards that honour businesses and leaders who are helping advance the tourism industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.
 
“The Tourism Excellence Awards are a means to both celebrate the achievements of the tourism industry and show appreciation for the hard work and relentless efforts to bring success to our industry,” says Darlene Thomas, HNL Chair. “With the growing number of nominations received, the awards selection committee were tasked with a very difficult job!  The quality of the nominees was phenomenal and speaks to the creativity and passion that is present in the tourism industry.  I would like to congratulate all the recipients and sincerely thank them for their contribution to tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

H. Clayton Sparkes Accommodator of the Year Award - sponsored by the Sparkes Family in recognition of the contribution their father made to the tourism industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.  The award recognizes an individual or company in the accommodations sector who exhibits a dedication to quality service, a commitment to the tourism industry and makes a solid contribution to the communities in which they live. This award was presented at the Tourism Excellence Awards Gala by Bruce Sparkes, Clayton Hospitality Inc.
 
Presented to: Ocean Delight Cottages, Whiteway, NL.
 
Cal LeGrow Innovator of the Year Award – sponsored by Cal LeGrow, this award acknowledges operators who demonstrate ingenuity and creativity in their business activities. Recipients of this award have a positive impact on the tourism industry by creating something new or putting a new spin on a product or service. This award was presented at the Tourism Excellence Awards Gala by Rod Vatcher, Cal LeGrow.

John Atkins and Co. Tourism Champion of the Year Award – sponsored by John Atkins & Co., this award is presented to an individual that has worked diligently to ensure that the tourism industry prospers, and as such have given freely of their time, often at personal expense because they are passionate about this industry. They are true champions of the industry. This award was presented at the Tourism Excellence Awards Gala by John Atkins, John Atkins & Co.

Maxxim Vacations Tourism Business of the Year Award- sponsored by Maxxim Vacations, this award recognizes businesses that have built a reputation for excelling and continuously improving upon all areas of operations – customer service, human resources and business results. Recipients of this award not only excel in their business operations, but acknowledge and embrace their role in improving the tourism industry of Newfoundland and Labrador. This award was presented at the Tourism Excellence Awards Gala by Jill Curran, Maxxim Vacations.

Corporate Partner of the Year Award - presented by Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador to a tourism industry partner that has been successful in developing creative and effective alliances within the tourism industry that improve HNL’s and the industry’s ability to achieve its goals. This award was presented at the Tourism Excellence Awards Gala by HNL Chair, Darlene Thomas.

Restaurateur of the Year Award – presented by the Restaurant Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, this award was established to recognize the essential role of the food service industry in developing tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador. This award was presented at the Tourism Excellence Awards Gala by Andrea Maunder, Outgoing President of the Restaurant Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
 
Presented to: Bonavista Social Club, Upper Amherst Cove, NL.

PRIDE Award - presented by the Bed and Breakfast Association of Newfoundland and Labrador to a business or owner/operator that has been instrumental in raising the profile of the Bed & Breakfast industry. This award was presented at the Tourism Excellence Awards Gala by Dion Finlay, President of the Bed and Breakfast Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Norman Parsons Memorial Award - presented by the Bed and Breakfast Association of Newfoundland and Labrador to a Bed and Breakfast business or owner/operator that has excelled in both hospitality and longevity in the industry and is recognized for displaying such attributes as warmth, hospitality, personality, outstanding service, quality and dedication. This award was presented at the Tourism Excellence Awards Gala by Dion Finlay, President Bed and Breakfast Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Cultural Tourism Award – Presented by Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador, Canadian Heritage and the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, the award acknowledges an individual or organization that recognizes and promotes the pursuit of cultural expression within the tourism industry. This award was presented at the Provincial Luncheon by the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
 
Presented to: The Cupids Legacy Centre, Cupids, NL.
 
The Doug Wheeler Award – presented by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, the Doug Wheeler Award recognizes an individual who has made a long-term contribution to the tourism industry. This award was presented at the Provincial Luncheon by the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

The Sustainable Tourism Award – presented by Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador and Parks Canada, the Sustainable Tourism Award is presented to the industry operator who has made strides in sustainable tourism practices and continually works toward the protection of our natural and cultural resources. This award was presented at the Tourism Professional Development Luncheon by Carol Sheedy, Parks Canada.
 
Presented to: Nunatsiavut Solutions, operators of the Torngat Mountains Base Camp & Research Station.

Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2013 Annual Conference and Trade Show, took place at the Delta St. John’s Hotel and Conference Centre from February 20-22, 2013 and is the largest annual gathering of tourism stakeholders in Newfoundland and Labrador.  The event hosted and organized by the provincial tourism industry association, Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL), saw over 350 delegates and trade show exhibitors gather in St. John’s for the event.
