Chris Kirby Releases New CD "Wonderizer" - Audio Interview

St. John’s, NL – May 18, 2012 – For Newfoundland’s Chris Kirby, his new album represents the two worlds he works. On the one side, he sings of the virtues of love, decency and the joy of performing. Then he takes on the seedy underworld of the bar and entertainment industries. Greasy vs. Honey is what he calls it which is what he compares to a struggle between good and evil.
Always consistent in producing an elegant sound, Chris remains true to his course with “Wonderizer.” His sound has the familiar feel of vintage 70’s funk and soul while he maintains a serious focus on his songwriting.
Chris takes what he does seriously. On the very day he was scheduled to release his new album, he took time to join other local artists who held a news conference to complain about the cutbacks at CBC Newfoundland. We caught up with him afterward and you can listen to Chris speak about his own music in the Soundcloud file below.
Wonderizer was recorded in two different St. John’s studios. Kirby (who also produced the record) opted for the 1970’s console and gear at Groove Den Studios to achieve the classic vintage sound found on some of the more gritty tunes. Henge Studios was used to attain the more polished pop melodies that Kirby sought to capture in the second half of the album.
“At the last minute, I decided to pit good versus evil and let them duke it out on the one full length record,” said Kirby. “The style remains consistently funky, but the songwriting content changes up a bit in the middle of the album, creating a distinctive Side A/Side B effect.” In order to maximize that effect for listeners, Kirby will be releasing the album on vinyl later in 2012. The single from the album is “Waiting So Long” and is streaming on the Soundcloud file.
Wonderizer is an independent release, and is available digitally on iTunes and other online distributors.
